Many people don't think of Stockton, some 90 miles inland, as a port town. Yet since its founding by Capt. Charles M. Weber in 1848, this city has served as one of California's most important ports. Throughout the years Stockton has evolved from a rough-and-tumble harbor town to an agricultural, business, and transportation center and has done so with a great amount of style and finesse.
