While exploring a rare nebula, a mysterious energy being makes is way on board the Enterprise and materializes in the form of a young girl's imaginary friend. Though the ship experiences strange power fluctuations, Picard agrees to remain in the nebula to conduct further experiments. Meanwhile, Clara (Noley Thornton) and her imaginary friend, Isabella (Shay Astar), begin to explore the ship, including sections which are off-limits to children. When Troi (Marina Sirtis) encourages Clara to forget her imaginary friend and play with real children, Isabella becomes enraged and threatens to destroy the Enterprise. As the crew struggles to escape from the nebula, strange energy strands envelope the ship and begin the drain its power. As the danger mounts, Picard comes to a terrifying realization.
